Four medals in the Dutch International

Venray 2010 Medalists

29 – 30 May we entered 10 of our young competitors in the Venray International Holland where we had to compete against 30 different countries and we were delighted with 1 x silver and three bronze medals. It was also pleasing to have lost in two of the bronze finals but still knowing we took honourable 5th places.

Our best results came as follows:

Prisca Awiti     Silver    12-14 year category
Prisca is getting more and more polished in her performances and after a hard fought day she ended up in the final. In the final it did not go all her way and she unfortunately walked on to the young Dutch girl who was also in her countries squad and got thrown for the maximum score of ippon.

Philip Awiti, -90 kgs in the u20 category, Nathaniel Stapleton senior – 73 kgs category and Rhys Thompson -55kgs in the u15 age category all took well deserved bronzes in large competitive groups. Rhys Thompson for example beat both a Latvian and Russian young competitor.

Tia Thompson -44 kgs in the under 17 year category and Jonathon Perez in the -66kgs senior category both unfortunately lost in their bronze finals but still to respectable 5th places.

It was a great experience for all who competed.

European Cup - Crawley

Siobhan O'Neill - Bronze European Cup

Enfield Judo Clubs Siobhan O'Neill wins bronze in the European Cup, a senior B tournament, at the K2 arena Crawley.

Siobhan O'Neill got the rewards she has put in so much time and effort for at the K2 Arena on Sunday the 16 May. Siobhan matched her skills against Europe's best in the u52kgs weight category and come away with what can only be described a brilliant bronze medal. Siobhan unfortunately lost in the Semi-final which put her into the bronze final against a quality Dutch opponent who she threw for the maximum score of ippon (10) in 30 seconds of a 5 minute contest. Consequently she has been recruited immediately into the British squad and selected to represent Great Britain, another B tournament, in Slovenia in June.

As representative of the Enfield Judo Club and Siobhan’s coach this type of success is what we work and dream to achieve.

Belgium International Judogne

Date: April, 2010

This was a difficult International and it was very pleasing to take five (5) major medals from nine competitors.

The successful competitors were as follows:

Senior category.

Woman u57Kgs – Siobhan O’Neill and Amy Thompson
Lucky for us Amy and Siobhan were on different sides of the draw therefore both young women fought their way through difficult groups to meet in the final.

Both girls knowing each other meant is was always going to be difficult but almost at the end of the five minuet fight Siobhan held Amy down for the maximum score of ten.

Senior Mens:

16 year old Philip Awiti fought the senior u90kgs category and Philip should his pure class By not being overaud,  he threw all opponents for the maximum score of ten to win gold with ease.

Junior Age Band:

-40kgs category – Tia Thompson
Tia has started to find her way this year and carried on the benefits of her hard efforts in training by taking a well earned silver medal after loosing in a very close contested final.

U70kgs category – Prisca Awiti
Prisca is a real young star at present she has not lost a fight June 2009 winning golds in every competition she has entered. Again at this competition she was also noticeably much better than anye else in her group by taking the gold easily.

London Area Age Banded championships-02, May, 2010

We took 6 fighters, who were not otherwise engaged, to this London Area event at Crystal Palace and it was very pleasing to get 5 medals from 6 entrants.

The successful players were as follows:

10/11 year category

Nile Gilfillian o50kgs  This was Niles 1st competition and what a start he fought like someone who has done this type of thing many times. We were all delighted that Nile took a well deserved Silver.

12/13 year category

Diju Awiti u38kgs       Diju is an up and coming young player from the club and and he really showed his potential taking a well deserved bronze.

Prisca Awiti u70kgs   Prisca kept up her record of not being beat since last year. Again she swept all aside to take gold.

14/15 year category

Thomas Hill u60kgs    Thomas has been having a hard time of late but is starting to enjoy his judo again and showed how much he is back into his sport by losing in the final to take silver

Samuel Hill u60kgs    Samuel like his brother has been having a hard time of late and like Thomas has got it together again and we were all delighted for him to take the bronze behind his brother. Both unfortunately lost to the same person.

2010 Has seen some real telling success for the Enfield Judo Club, finding rewards with Amy Thomson, Philip and Prisca Awiti in major competitions both home and abroad.

Antwerp Open 2010 - Date: 23 – 24 January 2010

Prisca taking Gold in Antwerp 2010

On the 23rd and 24th January we moved up a class and entered the Antwerp Open which was prize fighting.
1)      Prisca Awiti under 15 years in the -63kgs category had another brilliant day by beating all in front of her to win the gold and one of the latest mobile phones. She beat all by the maximum score of 10.
2)      Kadeem Lynch-Prime and Samuel Hill both under 17 years in the -55kgs category fought really well and both take very good 7th places from 60 competitors. The seventh place speaks for its self.
3)      Philip Awiti in the under 20 years, -90kgs category fought brilliantly to take 5th place. The standard was really high but Philip was up for it winning two fights and loosing two. The standard was top European and therefore showed that Philip has now also arrived on the European market with respect.

SENIOR ANTWERP OPEN

4)      Amy Thompson in the under 20 years, -52kgs category.
Amy fought her first senior International abroad and unfortunately lost to the Dutch number one junior in her first fight. Due to the fact that she lost to the eventual winner of the competition she was brought back in to compete for the bronze medal but the age difference told in the end. But it was a very good introduction.
5)      Philip Awiti fought again in the senior competition in the -90kgs category and although is still only 16 years old he fought brilliantly to again take a very respectable 7th place from a group of 30 competitors.
6)      Nathaniel Stapleton fought in the -73kgs category and unfortunately had to pull out of competition injured.
7)      We also had Jonathon Perez -66kgs and Liam Harrison -60kgs competing and although they both fought really well and should be proud of themselves as the standard was very high. They both like everyone else will have picked up valuable experience for the future.

Brother and Sister Take Golds in Class 2 Junior International

Prisca Awiti - Gold Flanders 2009Philip Awiti - Gold Flanders 2009

Over the weekend of the weekend of the 31 Oct – 01 Nov we entered 7 young players in the Flanders Cup, Lommel, Belgium, which was a class 2 Junior International Held by the Belgium and Flemish Judo Federations and we came away with 2 brilliant gold medals.
The first gold came from 13 year old Prisca Awiti in the under 15 year category at u63 kgs,  again she was in tremendous form, she beat all by the maximum score of ten to take the gold medal and a 50 euro voucher. The great Britain selectors see Prisca as a real future talent and are considering taking her to some European Judo camps ahead of her time for experience.

The second Gold came from brother Pillip Awiti in the under 17 year category at u90kgs. Phillip made up for his disappointment of just loosing out on a national medal. He had an excellent day in a very difficult group to take gold and also a 50 euro voucher for his success.

Amy Thompson also had an excellent day but like Philip in our own national championships where bad refereeing robbed her of a place in the final and therefore had to be content with 4th place But still a very good placing.

Enfield Judo Club Win three Junior National Medals

Junior National Medalists

Over the weekend of the 10-11 October at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield we had seven competitors from our club representing the London area.

From seven competitors we did not let ourselves down by coming away with 1 x gold, 2 x bronzes and 2 x 5th places as unfortunate loosing bronze finalists.

The successful players were as follows:

Prisca Awiti  12/13 year age band, fighting u63kgs category
In the u63kgs category Prisca was head and shoulders above everyone, she beat all her opponents by the maximum score of ippon (10) to take gold and become the 2009 national champion. Prisca is going to be a star.

Rhys Thompson 12/13 year age band, fighting u55kgs category
Rhys rose to this challenge he lost one fight to the eventual gold medallist. He then had to pick himself up for the bronze final and that he did by winning the bronze medal in convincing fashion.

Amy Thompson 16/18 year age band, fighting u52kgs category
Amy has had an incredible year; she has represented Great Britain at 14/15 years in the Europeans and the Youth Olympics with distinction.  Now turned 16 Amy had to compete against older and much more mature opponents and she was up for the challenge. Amy rose to this challenge, she won all her fights, only loosing in the semi final and therefore putting her in the bronze final and she then proved the point that she is there to stay by throwing her opponent for the maximum score of ippon (10) to take a well deserved bronze.

It should also be noted that we had two loosing bronze finalists who took two real credible 5th places. In the 12/13 year old age band was young Shannon Austin and in the 16/18year age band Philip Awiti. They should also be congratulated.

The Enfield Judo Club are looking for sponsorship, the Club subsidise young people traveling abroad and without financial help our progress will surely slow down.  In the past year due to sponsorship from the Metropolitan Police and the Outback Steakhouse our progress has been tremendous.  We have approximately 70 members with young people from Russia, Africa, Mexico and certainly many from unfortunate families all of whom the Club subsidise.

Enfield Judo Club teach in local special needs and mainstream schools with our intentions being to find a young player for a future Olympics.

Anyone who would like to join our club, or has ideas that would help us to go forward financially, should contact George Hyslop on 01480 381714 - Mobile 07799770919 or contact us by e-mail, enfieldjudoclub@ntlworld.com
