Brother and Sister Take Golds in Class 2 Junior International

Prisca Awiti - Gold Flanders 2009Philip Awiti - Gold Flanders 2009

Over the weekend of the weekend of the 31 Oct – 01 Nov we entered 7 young players in the Flanders Cup, Lommel, Belgium, which was a class 2 Junior International Held by the Belgium and Flemish Judo Federations and we came away with 2 brilliant gold medals.
The first gold came from 13 year old Prisca Awiti in the under 15 year category at u63 kgs,  again she was in tremendous form, she beat all by the maximum score of ten to take the gold medal and a 50 euro voucher. The great Britain selectors see Prisca as a real future talent and are considering taking her to some European Judo camps ahead of her time for experience.

The second Gold came from brother Pillip Awiti in the under 17 year category at u90kgs. Phillip made up for his disappointment of just loosing out on a national medal. He had an excellent day in a very difficult group to take gold and also a 50 euro voucher for his success.

Amy Thompson also had an excellent day but like Philip in our own national championships where bad refereeing robbed her of a place in the final and therefore had to be content with 4th place But still a very good placing.

Enfield Judo Club Win three Junior National Medals

Junior National Medalists

Over the weekend of the 10-11 October at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield we had seven competitors from our club representing the London area.

From seven competitors we did not let ourselves down by coming away with 1 x gold, 2 x bronzes and 2 x 5th places as unfortunate loosing bronze finalists.

The successful players were as follows:

Prisca Awiti  12/13 year age band, fighting u63kgs category
In the u63kgs category Prisca was head and shoulders above everyone, she beat all her opponents by the maximum score of ippon (10) to take gold and become the 2009 national champion. Prisca is going to be a star.

Rhys Thompson 12/13 year age band, fighting u55kgs category
Rhys rose to this challenge he lost one fight to the eventual gold medallist. He then had to pick himself up for the bronze final and that he did by winning the bronze medal in convincing fashion.

Amy Thompson 16/18 year age band, fighting u52kgs category
Amy has had an incredible year; she has represented Great Britain at 14/15 years in the Europeans and the Youth Olympics with distinction.  Now turned 16 Amy had to compete against older and much more mature opponents and she was up for the challenge. Amy rose to this challenge, she won all her fights, only loosing in the semi final and therefore putting her in the bronze final and she then proved the point that she is there to stay by throwing her opponent for the maximum score of ippon (10) to take a well deserved bronze.

It should also be noted that we had two loosing bronze finalists who took two real credible 5th places. In the 12/13 year old age band was young Shannon Austin and in the 16/18year age band Philip Awiti. They should also be congratulated.

18th July 2009 - National Teams competition, St Helen, Lancs

National Medalists 2009

In the Junior boys and girls teams we were fortunate to have four of our young players selected to represent London against other areas throughout the United Kingdom.

Teams are made up of 11 player of weight from girls u32kgs – o78kgs, boys u34kgs – o81kgs

The players selected were as follows: Boys team: Philip Awiti-Alcaraz fighting at over81kgs

The boys team competed brilliantly throughout the day, in fact so well that they won their pool and then went on to win the gold.

Girls team: Shannon Austen fighting at u36kgs and Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz fighting at u63kgs

The girls, like the boys, had a very good day with the only loss of the day being in the final, but still to take a very good national silver.
The pleasing point for us at Enfield Judo Club was the fact that we had three players from the club representing London and therefore picking up another three national medals.

Amy Thompson represented Great Britain in the Youth Olympics in Finland and although Amy did her best and fought admirably she unfortunately went out in the first round by the smallest of scores to a very good Hungarian girl who went on to lose in the bronze medal final. Amy Thompson and Philip Awiti have now both going to Italy end August for a weeks training.

ENFIELD JUDO CLUB HAVE TWO PLAYERS SELLECTED TO REPRESENT GREAT BRITAIN IN EUROPE

Amy Thompson and Philip Awiti

15 year olds Amy Thompson and Philip Awiti have both been selected to represent Great Britain in the Junior European Championships  26 - 28 June in Slovenia.

We wish them both all the success with there efforts in Slovenia and they can take heart in knowing that they were two that were  chosen.

Philip was undoubtedly the player of the weekend, he fought on the Sunday and and had a blinding day by throwing all for the maximum score of ippon (10 points) and taking the gold medal with ease. Philip has been selected to represent Great Britain in The European championships in Slovinia 26 – 28 June.

Gold: Amy Thompson, category under 17 years, weight u48kgs

Like Philip, Amy also had a blinding day, she beat all by the maximum score to take the gold quite comfortable. Amy has also been chosen to represent Great Britain at the European Championships in Slovinia.

Silver: Samuel Hill, category under 14 years, weight u50kgs

Samuel has only recently moved up to the u50kgs weight group and although there was plenty youngsters from many countries in his group, he still fought his way through to the final but had to be content with a well deserved silver.

MORE AND MORE SUCCESS FOR ENFIELD JUDO CLUB

North West Age banded Junior Ranking Competition
Date: 7th March 2009

Success came from the following young players:

Gold:     AMY THOMPSON
Amy had a blinding day, and although she started work-man-like she went on to win her next three fights and the gold medal convincingly.

Silvers:  SAMUEL HILL AND PRISCA AWITI
Having had a virus and missed valuable training, Samuel was still good enough to breeze into the final of a large group. In the final fitness told and Samuel lost by a hold down in the golden score and had to be content with the silver.
Prisca our 12/13year old national silver medallist at u57kgs  had been on a family holiday in Mexico since Christmas and with one weeks training and fighting up a weight category at u63kgs still showed her promise by taking a very good silver.

We are delighted to say that both Amy and Philip went through with flying colours into 1st spot and are in the driving seat to represent Great Britain in the European Championships in Slovakia in June this year. They will now both be montored over the next 6 weeks with regards to their training progress and attitude.

2008 Junior National Championships-Sheffield

GOLD FOR AMY THOMPSON

Enfield Judo Club entered 7 young competitors in the 2008 UK  Junior National Championships, which were held in the English Institute of Sport, Shefield. We come away with 1 x national gold and 2 x national silver medals.

National Medalists 2008

First to fight was 15year old Amy Thompson and how she performed on the day. Amy went into the final winning all her fights impressively by the maximum score of ippon (ten). In the final at the end of the day Amy fought a very controlled contest to win by a yuko (5 points) and take the gold for Enfield and become Junior national champion.   This means that Amy is the number one candidate to represent Great Britain in the 2009 European Championships. Enfield Judo Club are all very proud of Amy.

Next to fight was 15 year old Philip Awiti and like Amy had an excellent day. Philip won all his fights impressively by the maximum score of ippon (10points) and into the final. Philip was so unlucky he was winning by a very wide margin and during one of his attacks on which he also scored, he badly damaged his shoulder and although Philip tried his best to carry on but the pain proved to much and he had to settle for the silver. Philip was clearly the better player on this day and the injury lost him the gold and also a chance to represent us in the Junior Europeans.

Our other representatives Samuel Hill u46kgs, Kadeem Lynch-Prime u46kgs and Thomas Hill u42kgs all fought admirably and all only loosing one fight on the day and enter into their bronze final and sadly all three come of second best but never- the- less take very good 5th place.

Our next competitor was 12 year old Prisca Awiti in the u57kgs category. Prisca won all her fights in impressive style and and take her rightful place in the final. In the final she was very relaxed and we all felt quietly confident but unfortunately Prisca like her brother Philip injured her shoulder badly and had to pull out and therefore accept the silver medal.

Our last competitor was 12 year old Shannon Austen in the u36kgs category. Shannon had a very good day under the circumstances that she did not make her weight of u32kgs and had to fight up a weight at u36kgs. The weight difference was just too much on the day. She still won fights on the day and lost in the fight before bronze. It was a satisfactory day for Shannon

SIX MEDALS IN BELGIUM INTERNATIONAL SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER

On a hard day at a high quality C band competition in Ingelmunster, Belgium, Enfield Judo Club had a tremendous day taking six medals. Leading the way was Nathaniel Stapleton who took an excellent gold in the under 73 kilo category winning all of his five fights. Siobhan O’Neill took bronze in the under 52 kilo category winning two and losing one of her fights. Samuel Hill fought brilliantly in the under 46 kilo category, winning six and losing one in a very big group, to take the bronze. Amy Thompson took a bronze in the under 48 kilo category winning two and losing one. Prisca Awiti fought in the under 57 kilo category and also took a bronze winning two and losing one fight. The final medal of the day went to Philip Awiti, who despite fighting relatively well, lost both his fights and took a consolation medal.

GOLD AND SILVER IN WELSH SENIOR OPEN

Nathan StapletonOn Saturday the 4th October, Enfield Judo Club continued their successful year with another impressive haul of medals at the Welsh senior open this weekend. Fifteen year old Amy Thompson (-48 kilos) got proceedings under way with an impressive, if unsuccessful, first foray in to senior competitive judo. She lost her first fight to the Scottish number three by a yuko (5 point score) but looked solid throughout the five minute bout. Amy was unlucky to lose her second fight to the British number three by Ippon (maximum ten point score); despite threatening to upset the more experienced player, Amy never managed to finish any of her attacks with a score and finished the competition in a respectable fifth place. Siobhan O’Neill (-52 kilos) took up where Amy left off: losing her first fight to the British number two despite looking like the better fighter; however she managed to raise her game in the second fight and dominated the Scottish girl before finishing the fight with a brilliant leg grab for Ippon, which earned her the silver medal. Nathaniel Stapleton (-73 kilos) started the day slowly, losing his first fight by a Koka (3 point score), and was lucky to win his second fight against a feisty Scottish player, however, the win was good enough to see him through to the knock out rounds. Nathaniel was greatly improved in the knock outs and started by defeating his first opponent by Wazari (seven point score) with a hold down; the next fight proved a lot easier with Nathaniel destroying his opponent within thirty seconds with a lightning fast leg grab, this took him in to the semi finals against the British number four: despite taking an early lead, Nathaniel lost the fight on the ground where his opponent arm locked him to win by submission. The loss meant that Nathaniel dropped down to fight for bronze: the fight was a tense affair with his opponent taking an early lead before Nathaniel began to assert himself; eventually this dominance paid off as Nathaniel took his opponent to the ground with a lovely hip throw before holding him down to take the win and earn himself the bronze.

LAKELAND OPEN - KENDAL

Enfield Judo Club enjoyed a successful weekend at the Lakeland open judo competition in Kendal –the club travelled north with a squad of six players and came away with two gold and three silver medals as well as a hard fought fifth place. The first medal of the day went to Samuel Hill – competing in the under 46 kilo category – who battled his way in to the final by winning three fights and showing a great amount of determination in the semi-final where he was losing with 5 seconds to go but managed to pull a wonderful counter throw out of the bag to win the fight – however the final was a different proposition all together – Samuel never seemed to get going and was countered with a lovely leg sweep about a minute in to the fight to ensure he only came away with a silver. Shannon Austen fought up a weight in the under 36 kilo category due to a lack of numbers in her own weight group (-32 kilos); however she did not let this size difference phase her as she put in a wonderful performance to ensure she won all three of her fights and came away with the gold medal. Thomas Hill did very well in the under 42 kilo category – he won his way in to the final with ease defeating all his opponents with the maximum ‘ippon’ score – however, as happened with his brother, Thomas never got going in the final and was dominated in the grips by a stronger opponent and was eventually caught for ‘ippon’ with a minute remaining. Sasha Michalivitch (-30 kilos) had a good day, coming away with a silver medal: despite losing both his fights in a best of three situation, Sasha fought admirably against an older and more experienced fighter, he put in some excellent attacks and his work rate was second to none – he never let the fact that his opponent was part of the British squad phase him, he kept to his own game plan and was unfortunate to lose both the fights. In contrast, Prisca Awiti (-57 kilos) had a bad day by her high standards; despite starting promisingly by winning her first fight, she seemed to be lacking the concentration, determination and confidence that she usually shows and lost the following two fights due to making costly errors – the worst of which came in the fight for a bronze medal where Prisca rolled off her opponents attack in order to free herself on the ground only to make it seem like her opponent had thrown her flat on her back, which in judo means that her opponent was given ippon and won the fight. Prisca knows she can fight better than this and was deeply disappointed at her own performance. The final medal of the day came from Philip Awiti in the over 73 kilos category. Philip showed a lot of class by defeating all of his opponents with the maximum ippon score and coming away with the gold; in doing this he also rose to the challenge set down by his coach which was to finish all his fights within a combined time of 60 seconds – Philip managed it in 45. Enfield judo club are very happy with the results of the competition and hope that the fighters will continue their good form at the nationals in October.

The Enfield Judo Club are looking for sponsors who would like to support Judo in and around the Enfield Borough our costs are high due to our pledge and commitment and therefore should potential sponsor be interested please contact George Hyslop Enfield Judo Club.

FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ENFIELD JUDO CLUB

The past weeks have been busy but very satisfying for Enfield Judo Club with success in national junior and senior ranking, University nationals and European junior trials.

1st and 2nd April:

Midland age Band Ranking Competition:

11 of our young players entered this tough Midlands national ranking competition. They fought their hearts out and we come away with 2 x gold medals, 3 x silver medals and 1 bronze and therefore it was a very proud day for the club to have been associated with these young members. They were an inspiration for others in the club. The winners were as follows:

Gold Medals. 12 yr old Prisca Awiti and 12 yr old Rhys Thompson

Silver Medals.    14yr old Amy Thompson, 12 yr old Samuel Hill and 12 yr old Jack Penfold

Bronze Medal.    13yr old Harry Penfold

8th and 9th April:

Both Nathaniel Stapleton and siobhan O'Neill entered the English open which was held in Kendal, Cumbria and both fought briliantly to come away with bronze medals. Both young competitors are from Enfield, ranked 3rd in the United Kingdom in there respective weight caregories and therefore to have  two youngsters from the Borough with such a high ranking and 2012 Olympics round the corner we are closing in on the leading contenders.

15th April:

14 yr old Amy Thompson from Kingsmead school was selected to compete in the European Trials at Shefield for the right to represent britain in the Junior European Championships to be held the midle of this year.

There were three girls from England (Amy being one) One from Scotland and one from Wales to fight out the righ for to be the representative. Amy fought briliantly but unfortunately loosing in the final and taking second spot and had to be content with the reserve placing.

On the same day Siobhan O'Neill fought the u57kgs category in the University game also held in Shefield over the weekend and like in the English open on the week previously Siobhan unfortunately lost in thesemi final and had to be content with winning the bronze. However on a posative note it was a hard category and bronze was still a very good result.

Again we must thank all our sponsors The Metropolitan Police and the Outback Steakhouse for 2007-2008 for making all this progress possible because without their support progress would most definately be much more difficult.

INTERNATIONAL MEDALS FOR ENFIELD JUDO CLUB

Over the weekend of the 2-3 February 2008, Enfield Judo Club took 13 young competitors to the Hoogland International, Amersfoort, Holland and we came away with 6 medals.  The competition hosted 700 competitors with entries from Czechoslovakia, Israel, Germany, France, United Kingdom etc.  This competition is now one of the hardest of the Dutch competitions and to take 6 medals was quite pleasing.

The medals were achieved by the following people:

Name                                    Age Band            Category             Medal

Philip Awiti                           14/15 Years          u81kgs               Silver
Amy Thompson                     14/15 Years         u48kgs              Gold
Rhys Thompson                     12/13 Years         u46kgs              Gold
Shannon Austen                     10/11 Years         u32kgs              Silver
Liam Harrison                        16/18 Years         u55kgs              Silver
Remi Austen                            6/8 Years            u24kgs              Bronze

The Enfield Judo Club are looking for sponsorship, the Club subsidise young people traveling abroad and without financial help our progress will surely slow down.  In the past year due to sponsorship from the Metropolitan Police and the Outback Steakhouse our progress has been tremendous.  We have approximately 70 members with young people from Russia, Africa, Mexico and certainly many from unfortunate families all of whom the Club subsidise.

Enfield Judo Club teach in local special needs and mainstream schools with our intentions being to find a young player for a future Olympics.

Anyone who would like to join our club, or has ideas that would help us to go forward financially, should contact George Hyslop on 01480 381714 - Mobile 07799770919 or contact us by e-mail, enfieldjudoclub@ntlworld.com
