Club Welfare Officer - John Mercer Our Club Welfare Officer is John Mercer. John has been involved in Judo for over thirty years, is a practising Dan Grade and also a level 2 BJA coach. He is also a Police Sergeant working in Enfield Town, in charge of the Town ‘Transport Hub’. John’s primary role as CWO is; To be the first point of contact for coaches, parents, children or young people who have concerns about children’s welfare, poor practice or child abuse. He will also assist the club to fulfill it’s responsibilities to safeguard children and young people at club level, implementing its child protection policy. John will assess any information received from any person, and decide whether to make a formal referral to a statutory child protection agency e.g. social services department or the police without delay. It is NOT the role of the club to decide whether a child has been abused or not. This is the task of the social services department and the police or NSPCC. As CWO he is also obliged to report any concerns to the BJA Lead Protection Officer. John will ensure confidentiality of information is maintained alongside the club’s management committee.
